“Bucking
Wild” puts an end to 2014!!
Happy New Year everyone from the Twin Valley Riding Club, wishing you a very happy, healthy and prosperous 2015. We sure experienced all that and more in 2014 and without question ended the year in a great way with great people.
You could definitely feel the buzz of excitement when you entered the Rocky Bar Arena as the Twin Valley Riding Club got ready to host their “Bucking Wild” New Year’s Eve Bash. With the countdown on to show time TVRC’s long-time friend and rodeo announcer Brad Stenberg pumped up the electricity even more. Finally with everything set Brad started things up introducing Local Star Search Finalist Cassandra Tomolak, her stunning and powerful performance of Oh Canada definitely set the tone of things to come.
Looking around at the competitors you could see they had their game faces on and had come to play. They were riding for the cash but more importantly for the bragging rights and hardware – the TVRC Champion Buckles.
But from the crack of the first latch you knew the Bar H Ranch and Rodeo Stock had come out in full force to provide every last cowboy that dared try with a “Bucking Wild” ride.
Bareback started it with local Mason Helmeczi the first ride of the night. With the crowd behind him, ride he did for a hard fought 76 points. Two more tried to catch him but not quite. Then it was as in the sport of rodeo, friend, travel partner and rival, Danny Vandenameele’s turn. Wow an explosive ride, a great match up between rider and horse, the whistle blows, the crowd on the edge of their seats waiting, waiting – how about an 83 point ride!!!. What a way to start.
Next up Saddle Bronc and although the 3 Wolfe boys fought hard, them broncs were just that bit stronger leaving each of them with a taste of arena dirt. Next year for sure!!
Now watch close cause with the heart and determination these kids rode with it was pretty hard to tell they were the Junior Steer Riding version of the still to come bull riders. Started with eight but in the end two young cowboys, Kaedyn Turrel and Nolan Cairns, rode hard to tie with a score of 71 points. With big grins hinting a little at how much fun they were having they both agreed to a ride off for the Buckle, unfortunately due to no lack of grit and try the stock had other ideas and left the boys sitting in the dust before the whistle.
But hey don’t go anywhere, the Stephen Hanis Memorial Wild Cow Riding was next. Long time TVRC member, 2014 grad and local girl Brooke Helmeczi was first out and what started as a fantastic ride didn’t quite make eight but darn girl it looked great!! Two more tried, would number four be the one? Yep! Karson Turrel came out and put on a cow riding clinic earning a 75 point score. The Hanis Family was on hand to present the Buckle to Karson. Karson was pretty proud of that buckle and when asked if it was his first he modestly said “nah 5th but the 1st for cow riding”. Pretty impressive collection of hardware for such a young man!!
We also had a special guest appearance by the great bucking horse “Coconut Shrimp” in the wild pony race with Callie Helmeczi, Nolan and Casey Cairns. The team had a bit of a rocky start with “Shrimp” showing them why he’s great but in the end they managed to ride the legend for a full two jumps. And for a little added fun the “Old Timers” Dusty Agecoutay, Michael Tomolak and Kelly Millward challenged the youngsters but came away with dirt on their faces.
OK OK, now it’s time to get really “Bucking Wild”, the bulls are coming and it was pretty obvious from the first ride out of the chute that the Bar H Bulls were feeling good and meant business. With the crowd cheering and the whole building going wild the competitors came a riding trying hard to make that whistle but I guess 13 just wasn’t their lucky number – end score Bulls 13 – Cowboys 0. So with the last bull doing his victory lap Brad thanked everyone for making the event a great success and hinted that maybe next year would be the 2nd Annual “Bucking Wild” New Year’s Eve Bash – Hmmmmmmm.
The evening ended with most people staying around to enjoy some socializing bringing in the New Year with family and friends, new and old. Thanks, take care and watch for more exciting events from the Twin Valley Riding Club.
